Wilt Chamberlain in Laker Gold

From the Winn Collection · Wilt Chamberlain Sports Porcelain statue, signed · No. __ / 500

Some pieces enter a collection because they are scarce. Others remain because they carry a memory. This one has done both.

Wilt Chamberlain was not simply one of basketball's great players; he was an outlier in the purest sense. At 7-foot-1, he brought force, reach, athleticism, and a competitive will that made the game bend around him. His 100-point game remains the NBA's single-game scoring record, and his 50.4-point average in 1961–62 still reads like a figure from another universe. By the end of his career, Chamberlain had won four league MVP awards, two NBA championships, and the 1972 Finals MVP with the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Laker Version of Wilt

This Sports Porcelain statue captures the Laker version of Wilt: the veteran center in the unmistakable gold of Los Angeles, low and powerful in a working stance rather than posed for ceremony. It recalls the final five NBA seasons he spent with the Lakers, where he helped anchor the celebrated 1971–72 championship team and its historic 33-game winning streak.

Issued as a signed, numbered limited edition of 500, this gold-uniform example is a substantial hand-painted porcelain tribute to No. 13, mounted on its original wooden base. It bears Wilt Chamberlain's signature on the presentation panel and was issued with a Sports Porcelain Certificate of Authenticity. The original certificate is being reunited with the statue from the owner's collection records. Comparable signed 11–12 inch Sports Porcelain Chamberlain statues have been cataloged by Heritage Auctions and Lelands, providing useful context for this distinctive vintage basketball collectible.

Why This One Matters

For me, the importance of this piece goes beyond its edition size. Years ago, I owned its harder-to-find purple-uniform counterpart, numbered from an edition of 100. That statue was taken in an office fire in 1997. Losing it was painful — not only because it was rare, but because collecting is never only about the object. It is about the years spent seeking, protecting, and living with the pieces that speak to you.

That experience made this gold edition even more personal. It survived, and it has remained with me through the years as part of a lifelong collection built one meaningful piece at a time. Now, after nearly three decades, I have made the difficult decision to let it move on — not because its story is finished, but because it deserves to be appreciated by its next steward.

“From one collector to another: may it be displayed with the respect due to The Big Dipper.”

This is an opportunity to own more than a signed, numbered Wilt Chamberlain statue. It is a piece of Lakers history, a tribute to one of the game's true giants, and a chapter from a collector's life.
